ABOUT US

How it all started

After spending my entire childhood wanting to do something in the animal industry I found myself 15 years into a corporate America job. While I was pretty good at the job, I more often than not found myself dreading the day ahead and dreaming of getting back into the animal field. I’m grateful for my time there because it gave me the skills and knowledge to take on a director position at a not-for-profit animal rescue, my dream job! During my time at the rescue I learned all I could about animal behavior, signs and signals an animal displays when they are sick or hurting, aggressive animal handling, vaccine and health protocols, enrichment techniques, canine nutrition and much more.

While at the rescue I adopted two sisters from a litter of puppies that we fostered. After only ever being able to have cats due to the time demands of my previous job this was an absolute game changer for me, and so began my search for the perfect pet sitter (I wish I had known they existed before)!

I am obsessed with their care and safety, the same level of obsession I feel about my human child. Is the door closed? Double check anyway. Is the harness secure? Triple check. Is the pavement to hot for their paws? Grass walks only on hot days. Did she just sneeze? Shake her head funny? Was that a normal poop? You know how it goes! I needed someone as obsessed with the details as I was. In addition one of my dogs, Amelia, is very cautious, nervous, and fearful of new people (and barks, while jumping face height, to show it) and needs to be introduced in a very specific way to ensure success and I found that no pet sitters in the area were willing to invest the time and energy my girl needed.

So it was time to create my next dream job, and Barks and Recreation was born. When I say that we care for your pets like my own, that means I am as obsessed with their safety, security, and comfort as I am with my own. I also love working with those nervous, shy, and even aggressive animals because, for one, there is nothing better than winning over a dog or cat that “doesn’t like people” and second, I want the parents of those pets to be able to work long hours, take a vacation or go away for a weekend and not feel held back in life because no one else can care for their animal. I aim to provide that level of care and commitment to every fur baby and their parents. And every one of my employees is carefully screened to ensure they are able and willing to provide it as well.

Warmly,

These sisters are “foster fails”

Biography:

Amelia and Hazel were born in North Carolina and came to CT with their mom and 6 other siblings when they were about 5 weeks old. The family was fostered by Elizabeth and Becca and these two sister dogs quickly wiggled, bumped, and snuggled their way into their hearts and found themselves a forever home. Both Amelia and Hazel attended puppy kindergarten at My Dogs Place and learned how to be polite puppies. Hazel moved on to Basic Manners and Leave It and continues to enjoy attending daycare. Amelia is a sensitive and nervous gal who prefers to stay home and love on her people.
