ABOUT US

How it all started

After spending my entire childhood wanting to do something in the animal industry I found myself 15 years into a corporate America job. While I was pretty good at the job, I more often than not found myself dreading the day ahead and dreaming of getting back into the animal field. I’m grateful for my time there because it gave me the skills and knowledge to take on a director position at a not-for-profit animal rescue, my dream job! During my time at the rescue I learned all I could about animal behavior, signs and signals an animal displays when they are sick or hurting, aggressive animal handling, vaccine and health protocols, enrichment techniques, canine nutrition and much more.

While at the rescue I adopted two sisters from a litter of puppies that we fostered. After only ever being able to have cats due to the time demands of my previous job this was an absolute game changer for me, and so began my search for the perfect pet sitter (I wish I had known they existed before)!

I am obsessed with their care and safety, the same level of obsession I feel about my human child. Is the door closed? Double check anyway. Is the harness secure? Triple check. Is the pavement to hot for their paws? Grass walks only on hot days. Did she just sneeze? Shake her head funny? Was that a normal poop? You know how it goes! I needed someone as obsessed with the details as I was. In addition one of my dogs, Amelia, is very cautious, nervous, and fearful of new people (and barks, while jumping face height, to show it) and needs to be introduced in a very specific way to ensure success and I found that no pet sitters in the area were willing to invest the time and energy my girl needed.

So it was time to create my next dream job, and Barks and Recreation was born. When I say that we care for your pets like my own, that means I am as obsessed with their safety, security, and comfort as I am with my own. I also love working with those nervous, shy, and even aggressive animals because, for one, there is nothing better than winning over a dog or cat that “doesn’t like people” and second, I want the parents of those pets to be able to work long hours, take a vacation or go away for a weekend and not feel held back in life because no one else can care for their animal. I aim to provide that level of care and commitment to every fur baby and their parents. And all team members are carefully screened and vetted through a 7 step hiring process, including personality tests and state and federal background checks, to ensure they are able and willing to provide it as well.

Warmly,
Elizabeth Cosentino

She attended an agricultural high school and groomed dogs for 6 years before joining corporate America. She spent 15 years working for a large company before landing her dream job at a non-profit animal rescue. I met my husband at the pet store where he was working after college. He noticed me because I had my 6-foot boa constrictorSnakeywrapped around my waist. I guess that was a bit unusual.

Biography:

I have loved and cared for animals—from furry to scaly to feathery—my entire life. Growing up, my family always had pets (guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, rats, mice, turtles, lizards…) and throughout my adult life I have had many types of pets, including dogs and cats, exotic birds, snakes, and marine fish and invertebrates. While I have had a fulfilling, 30-year career in the marketing communications field and am now a creative services consultant, something was missing from my life. I decided in 2021 to fulfill my dream of working with animals and joined Barks and Recreation to support pet owners by helping care for their pets.

I studied abroad in Portugal rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles!

Biography:

I am an ocean child at heart but have an extreme love for all animals.  I grew up with dogs, cats, ducks, and rabbits but I’d say I’m definitely a cat person.  As a child my dream job was to become a killer whale trainer at Sea World.  I wanted nothing more than to develop a trusting relations with an animal that big and powerful. I spent most of my time reading about marine life, animal behavior, and training techniques.  I got my Coastal Studies degree at UConn and spent years volunteering at the Mystic Aquarium.  I later realized that getting a paid job training sea creatures was nearly impossible in this area so I had to put that dream on hold.  For now, in my free time,  I love taking online classes that focus on animal care, behavior, and anything else that will help me create that special bond with every animal I come across.
